SHERMAN LOWELL died of a heart attack at his West Main street home at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Mr. Lowell was the son of James Willoughby and Jane Selleck Lowell and was born at Lamberton May 28, 1858.  The family was of New England ancestry, his ancestor, Sir Percival Lowell, coming to Massachusetts in 1639.  The family claimed descent from William the Conqueror.

Mr. Lowell served on many important grange committees and on various state and national commissions having to do with the farming industry.  In 1926 he was named by President Coolidge on the federal tariff commission serving on that body for sevral years and then retired from active life to his farm near Fredonia.  He continued active in the local grange until the last.

He served under Governor Smith as a member of a committee to investigate the high cost of living and during the war period he served in several capacities including membership of food and fuel supply committee and as a liberty bond drive speaker.  In 1934 he was defeated by Carolyn O’Day for congressman-at-large.

Mr. Lowell was married Nov. 22, 1889 to Martha L. Marsh, who survives him together with two sons, Fred A. and Clyde M. Lowell of Lamberton, both of whom are also active in grange work.  He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Eva Hall of Lamberton, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

There is a story that when Amos and his younger brother, Edward, were in the grocery business in St. Paul, they made an interesting trade with one of their customers.  This was during the days of bartering.  Customers would come to the store and trade for their needs.  One day, one of the women of the area came to the store and wanted to trade cream.  When asked what she wanted in return, the woman replied that she wanted cream.  That was peculiar and she was asked why she wanted to trade cream for cream.

The customer had a ready answer.  She just couldn’t use the cream because a mouse had fallen into it.  The mouse hadn’t hurt the cream and it wouldn’t bother anyone else because they didn’t know what had happened.

Amos traded but she didn’t know he traded her own cream back to her.
